I’ve seen severe cases.”</p>

<p>Psoriasis can appear at any age, on any part of the body. It is a life-long disease that may disappear at times, and then return. The condition is characterized by a rapid growth of the skin, which is fed by an increased blood flow to the affected area, said Dr. Steven R. Feldman, associate professor of dermatology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C.</p>
<p>It has many different looks, but the main one is a red, thickened, scaly patch. In one form, there are pus bumps. In another, there are half-inch, diffuse spots on the trunk. One of the most typical kinds is a plaque-like growth on the elbows and knees, which can also be scattered over other parts of the body.</p>
<p>While it sounds like psoriasis is just a cosmetic condition, it’s not. “It impacts a person’s health-related quality of life in every aspect that’s measurable,” Feldman said. “It can cause tremendous itching, pain and cracking of the skin that affects people’s function and movement.” If it’s on the soles of your feet, you may not be able to walk. If it’s on the palms of your hands, you may not be able to hold implements. Many people with psoriasis develop arthritis, as well. And scales are always falling off your skin.</p>
<p>“Psoriasis affects the way you think about yourself, and the way other people think of you,” he said.</p>
<p>Which is why a total-care approach for psoriasis patients is very helpful, said Daniel A. Lobovits, a psychologist with a private clinical practice in Boca Raton, Fla., who specializes in stress-related disorders. You need treatment for your body, and stress-reduction techniques for your mind.</p>
<p>“What happens is people get very discouraged,” said Lobovits, who heads a help line for psoriasis sufferers created by Exorex, an over-the-counter medication for the disease. The help line is staffed mainly with people who have psoriasis, but nurses train and supervise them. While they may discuss the benefits of a particular product, Lobovits maintains that the help line as an opportunity for sufferers to access support and information on all aspects of the disease.</p>
